Sparkle

The opposite of Darkle.

To give off sparks. To give off or reflect flashes of light; glitter. To be brilliant in performance. To shine with animation. To flash with wit.

I'll admit to anyone that I am a true magpie at heart, I love things that sparkle in all shapes and sizes. There's just something magical and wonderful about them.

I remember being a very young child and spending summers at my maternal grandparents' home village. The nearest town would always host summer celebrations in august which lasted for a week and ended with a show of fireworks. They told us many stories of people that were injured when they got too close to the exploding cases but in a time when there was no concept of health and safety, we were allowed to stand directly underneath the actual fireworks. I vividly remember feeling like I was surrounded by bursts of colourful lights and the sound was so deafening that I truly felt engulfed by this wonderful event and completely forgot about everything else.

This still happens to me to this day, even though its mostly diluted by the thousands of people blocking the view and the mandatory distance from the actual display. I dream of a day when I will be able to experience something similar to what I had as a child. Perhaps it is never to happen but one can only dream. In the meantime I take solace in what is available to me, sparkles of many kinds put a smile on my face almost every day.
